A Barber in Laurel, MD Who Actually Knows How to Work With Kids

Getting a haircut should not feel like a battle. For a lot of parents with kids who have autism, ADHD, or sensory sensitivities, that is exactly what it becomes every single time. The noise, the strangers, the unpredictability of a busy shop floor, the wait, the chaos. A child who is already managing a lot walks into that environment and shuts down or melts down before they ever sit in the chair.

TCUTME Barber Studio is different. And not just in setup in who is behind the chair.

The Environment

TCUTME operates out of a private suite at 8101 Sandy Spring Road in Laurel, Maryland. One room. One client. One barber. No waiting area filled with strangers, no other chairs with other clients, no unpredictable noise coming from every direction. When you walk in with your child, the space is calm. It stays calm for the entire visit.

Parents of children with sensory sensitivities know how much the environment matters before the first clipper ever turns on. The private suite removes most of the variables that make a traditional barbershop overwhelming the volume, the crowding, the stimulation. Kids who struggle in busy spaces tend to do significantly better here. That is not a coincidence. It is the point.

The shop has been described by clients as feeling like home. Comfortable, familiar, no chaotic energy. For a child who needs to feel settled before they can cooperate, that feeling is the difference between a good visit and a hard one.

The Barber

I am Talib "T," owner of TCUTME Barber Studio. I grew up the oldest of eight. I have seven younger siblings. I have been around children my entire life not occasionally, not professionally at first, but daily, from childhood into adulthood. I know how kids move, what they need, when to slow down, when to pause, when to let them reset, and when they are actually ready.

I have been working specifically with autistic children for close to eight years. That is not a specialty I picked up from a training or added to a bio. It is something that developed through real, repeated experience learning how different kids communicate, what triggers a hard reaction, what makes the session work, and what to do when something does not go as planned.

Every child is different. That is true for any client but it matters more with kids. Some need the clippers introduced slowly. Some need to hold something while we work. Some do best when we go in stages with breaks in between. Some need the session explained step by step before we start. I adjust to whatever the child needs not the other way around.

What Parents Say

The most common thing parents tell me is that their child has never made it through a full haircut anywhere else. They have tried other shops, other barbers, other styles of approach. The child cries, shuts down, or cannot sit still long enough to finish.

Then they come to TCUTME and it goes differently. Not because of a trick or a technique because the environment is calm and the barber is patient.

Your child's session is their session. We take the time it takes.

Children With Autism and Sensory Sensitivities

A traditional barbershop can be a lot for a child who processes sensory information differently. Multiple voices, clippers running at multiple stations, the smell of products, the unpredictability of when the noise stops and starts, unfamiliar faces. Any one of those things can throw off a child with autism before the haircut even begins.

At TCUTME, the sensory load is reduced from the moment you walk in. One room. Controlled noise. No surprise sounds from other clients or other chairs. A space that feels settled instead of activated.

I have worked with children across different points on the autism spectrum for close to eight years. I understand that what works for one child may not work for another, and I am not going to rush through a cut to prove a point. If your child needs to see the clippers before they turn on, we do that. If they need a break halfway through, we take it. If they do better when a parent is close, you stay close.

The goal is a good haircut and a child who does not dread coming back.

Children With ADHD

Kids with ADHD need a barber who can move with them literally and figuratively. The ability to hold still for a full haircut in a busy, stimulating environment is a real challenge. Add a long wait before even getting to the chair and you have already lost most of the session before it starts.

At TCUTME there is no wait. You book an appointment, you arrive, you sit down. The session starts immediately, in a calm room, with a barber who knows how to keep things moving at the right pace. There is no wasted time, no frustration building while someone else finishes up next to you. It is just the cut.

For kids with ADHD, eliminating the friction before the haircut begins is most of the battle. TCUTME eliminates that friction by design.

Frequently Asked Questions From Parents

My child has never made it through a full haircut. Is TCUTME worth trying? Yes. The environment and the experience are genuinely different from a traditional shop floor. I cannot guarantee every visit will be perfect no one can but I can tell you the setup removes most of what makes other shops difficult for kids with sensory sensitivities.

Can I stay in the room with my child during the cut? Yes. Parents are always welcome to stay in the suite for the full session. For a lot of kids, having a parent present is what makes the difference.

How do I book for a child with special needs? Book at tcutme.com and leave a note in the booking comments about your child what they typically need, what has worked before, what has not. That way I know before you arrive and we can set the session up right from the start.

Do you cut girls' hair too? Yes. TCUTME serves all children regardless of gender. Women and girls are welcome.

What if my child cannot finish the full cut in one session? We work with whatever we can do that day. A partial cut is better than a traumatic one. Some kids need a few visits to get fully comfortable. That is completely fine.
